For those of you who aren’t familiar with This or That, it’s a series here on the blog where I compare a couple of similar products.
A couple of months ago I was browsing Farmers and came across the Rimmel Velvet Matte nail polishes. You all know how much I love my Rimmel nail polishes so I picked up a couple to give them a go. Then last week I was in Topshop and saw they had a new matte range so I bought this light blue.
When matte nail polish first came out a few years ago, I thought it looked great and was really keen to try it but I don’t think I ever did. Fortunately for me, it seems matte nail polish has made a comeback. It’s such a chic look and while I’d typically associate it with autumn and winter, if you’ve got the right colour, it can be great in the warmer seasons too.
Rimmel Velvet Matte $12
I’ve talked about Rimmel nail polishes and why I love them many times before. Even though these matte ones have a different different formula to the regular Rimmel nail polishes, I’d rate these just the same.
These go on beautifully as they’re so smooth and opaque and with 1-2 coats and no topcoat they last 3-4 days on my nails.
As with the others, I love the brush on these – the Rimmel nail polish brush is definitely my favourite nail polish brush ever.
The matte finish on these is just stunning and I’m planning on picking up some more shades – I currently have the shade 013 Velvet Touch and 015 Midnight Kiss.
Topshop Matte Nails $15
The Topshop matte nail polish is obviously a lot lighter than the Rimmel ones so it did need an extra coat but I was pleasantly surprised as I’ve tried pastel nail polishes before that need at least four or five coats. The shade I’ve got is Affirm.
The matte finish on this isn’t as intense as the Rimmel ones but depending on your personal preference that could be a good thing as it’s more subtle.
One thing that was great to see was the shade range of these, I’ll definitely be picking up a couple of other shades – maybe a bright and a dark – next time I’m at Topshop.
The verdict? I prefer the Rimmel Velvet Matte to the Topshop Matte Nails because the matte finish is more striking. For me, if I’m wearing matte nail polish then I want it to make a statement. I also love the brush on these – a couple of swipes and your whole nail is done. In saying that, I will be purchasing more colours of both these products.
What’s your favourite matte nail polish? Do you have a matte top coat you’d recommend?
