I like to think that as I’ve got older, I’ve started to think about my purchases a lot more – I wait to find that perfect thing and I’m much more prone to “sleeping on it”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a sucker for impulse buys at the checkout and love a good splurge! I just now make more of an effort to really think about my purchases. Something that I’ve wanted for so long but just couldn’t justify the cost was a designer lipstick. More specifically, I wanted two lipsticks – one Chanel and one YSL.
When I was coming back from Australia last year, I had a few hours to kill so I perused the beauty counters in duty free. I decided to enquire about the price of the lipsticks, and they were surprisingly more affordable than I thought they’d be. Granted, this was in duty free and in Australia; here in New Zealand they are much pricier. They were both around the $40 mark – depending on your makeup shopping habits you might think that’s ridiculously expensive or perhaps you’ll think it’s a good price like I did.
In the past I’ve been much more likely to pick a $20 lipstick (or three) that is just okay over a $40 lipstick that I love. I’m just so drawn to a bargain! When I think about it, it doesn’t actually make sense though as I often end up with things I don’t really need. Combined with my effort to think about my purchases more, I’m also trying to buy quality over quantity and treat myself to the things I really truly want, as opposed to buying things just because they’re cheap.
So with this in mind, I was really happy to pay around $40 per lipstick. The cost of these has really paid off – I’ve pretty much worn one of these two every single day since I bought them in early November.
Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Shine (13) | Chanel Rouge Coco (430 Marie)
I’m really happy with the quality of both of them. They’re both really easy to apply and comfortable to wear. As they’re on the creamier side, neither last all day but I do find the Chanel one lasts a tad longer and I can easily eat a meal without needing to touch it up.
The shade Marie of the Chanel lipstick is a beautiful berry-tinted red that’s really easy to wear and is the perfect “everyday red”. Shade 13 of the Yves Saint Laurent lipstick is equally as stunning but a completely different colour. It’s a beautiful shiny pink that is noticeable while still great for everyday-wear.
